Book Description

How Does One's Childhood Relationship with
Parents and Siblings Affect the Decision to Marry?

The Dimensions of Companionship
by Paul Dennis Sporer

Family relations, ambition, personal freedom, moral values, the desire for intimacy, — all are highly important concepts in everyone's life. Yet integrating these components is difficult. This fascinating book helps us to think 'out of the box' and understand how these factors interact to form major life choices. The pathways that people take in life are carefully examined. For example, the social pressure to contribute to the economy is one reason why an individual leaves his home of origin to begin a new life situation, but a more important reason is related to problems in the development of individuality. In this regard, loss of a parent, especially a father who acts as a mentor, often leads to heightened valuation of marriage in order to provide emotional and mental support that is lacking at home. Further, marriage has traditionally been the main relationship in which these features can be harmonized, and Western society has offered a viable pathway where a succession of accomplishments can bring about happiness. Thus, it is possible to integrate personal and communal needs, while at the same time handling difficult material demands. However, a loss of traditional values in modern society has resulted in new complexities. Now, there is no guarantee of expected success in career, and chance, not choice, often affects career and social pathways. This leads to instability in marriage, just at a time when marriage has become the only important relationship, as other interactions have become unstable and distant. The Dimensions of Companionship maintains that the desire for intimacy carries more weight than the other factors; even today, with an understanding of traditional moral values, one can attain a companionate relationship that brings respect and consideration, despite home circumstances, poor upbringing or inadequate social skills.
