Has the Family Evolved into a Better Form or
Has it Foundered upon the Rock of Modernism?

The Concept of Family
by Paul Dennis Sporer

Family life stands as a vanguard in civilized society, yet it is under threat. This important new work, written by a master analyst of family life, discusses the ways that family life has changed. In The Concept of Family, Paul Dennis Sporer makes the intriguing observation that people in the past were happier, stronger, and more individualistic than people of our day. Sporer further states that standards are necessary for individuality, they give the person a structure upon which to build a distinctive, fulfilling life. And these standards have traditionally come from the family. Yet, the weakening of morality has led to a number of highly important changes to household functioning. Although both sexes have undergone significant change, it is specifically the feminine that has experienced a transformation, from reflecting idealism to embodying pragmatism. Women's traditional single role of upholding high moral standards, whatever the actual familial arrangement, gave way to multiple roles of wives, mothers, and domestics, roles today often empty of virtue or morality. Standards of behavior are now left to individuals to determine, and because people begin intimate activity when young, piecemeal and unintegrated concepts of love and affection are common. The many failures resulting from cheating and selfishness have led people to believe affection in no longer needed, and concerns related to materialism are paramount. This enlightening book asserts that, because of the way in which family life has changed, society now faces the danger of entirely losing its ability to contain the desperation of people who fruitlessly seek love.

Paul Dennis Sporer is the author of several books, including Liberating Love; Dimensions of Companionship; Equal but Different; and The Concept of Family. He has also written many articles, and has edited more than 30 books, including Gentle Measures, by Jacob Abbott; Views of Old Europe, by Bayard Taylor; Painting Explained, by Thomas Gullick; Born Three Times, by Thomas L. Johnson; The New Birth, by Austin Phelps; 1492; The Admiral of the Ocean Sea, by Mary Johnston; and Finding a Way Out, by Robert Moton.
